Sohn Fine Art's Education Program features unique photographic workshops  in the Berkshire area taught by our talented artists. We give local and visiting students the opportunity to learn from photographers in the top of their fields.

“YOU TOOK THAT WITH YOUR IPHONE!"

Savannah Spirit


1 Day - Sunday, October 6, 10am - 5pm

In conjunction with Sohn Fine Art's Exhibition, nude, Savannah Spirit will present a one-day workshop on using your iPhone as a fine art camera, just like her work in the show. Today's iPhones are much more than just a "point and shoot" camera, they are powerful tools for documenting your life through imagery, and an excellent means of creating stunning images. A plethora of apps await you! Most everyone has the ability to take a picture, but if you want to learn how to push your iPhone or iPad to its fullest and make your images more stunning, this is the course!

 

This workshop will give you a broader understanding of what you can do with some of its most popular photo apps. You will learn how to set up your new apps, how to crop, resize, add f/x filters, change styles/colors, add frames/borders, upload and share with social networks such as facebook and twitter. You will also have the opportunity to go out into the field and shoot your own images. Furthermore, you'll edit images with guidance and support from the instructor with a full critiques of your best shots of the day. By the end of the workshop, you will have a greater knowledge to play and experiment. Right at your fingertips, a new world of taking pictures will open up for you. 
REQUIREMENTS:
*  Must have an iPhone or iPad and an itunes account to buy and download apps
*  Must install the following apps before arrival to class. Picframe/Picfx/ Hipstamatic/ Oggl/ Process/ Big Photo

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

 

Savannah Spirit has worked as a freelance photographer since 1996. She received her BFA in Photography from Parsons. Shortly after, she founded the portfolio website Veaux.org. In 2010, Savannah worked as a photo consultant/curator for Hipstamatic and curated art exhibitions throughout NYC and Brooklyn. 2011 became Savannah's breakout year as a curator. From 2011-2012 Savannah served as guest editor for (American Society of Media Photographers) ASMP NY blog, Sharpen. Spirit now shoots primarily with her iphone becoming known for pushing the limits of its capabilities.

 

 

 

PEOPLE, LANDSCAPES & PLACE AT CHESTERWOOD

3 Days - Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday August 26, 27 & 28, 2013 1 - 5pm

$250 (Includes Printing & Framing for Exhibition)

Model fee: $30

All students who attend this workshop will be automatically included in an exhibition at Chesterwood August 31 - October 31. Price of the workshop includes printing and framing of image in exhibition.

REQUIREMENTS:

Comfortability with using manual mode on your camera.

 

Designed to help you create more unique images, this course will further refine your technical and aesthetic skills. Photography has the ability to tell stories about the relationship between people and place. Working with landscapes and portraits, you will complete exercises in composition, lighting, depth of field and editing. Learn how to combine vital elements to create a successful portrait or landscape with available light. The workshop will begin with a portfolio review and how you can take your work further. Classes will take place both in the classroom and on location. Discussions, demonstrations and assignments will help you develop the tools you need to produce a more effective narrative about the world in which we live. An edit on the final day will help you prepare your work for exhibition.

 

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

 

Cassandra Sohn is a freelance and fine art photographer and Gallerist originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico. She started Sohn Fine art in 2011 and runs all departments of the company, from the contemporary photography art gallery and fine art archival giclee printing business, to the Master Artist Series and Arts & Education Program. 

 

Sohn graduated from the New School in Manhattan with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Photography. She was the main contributing photographer in the book, Window on the Park - New York's Most Prestigious Properties On Central Park, published by Images Publishing.  She exhibits at Galleries and Museums  internationally.  Most recently she had exhibitions at Chesterwood  Museum in Stockbridge, MA; Berkshire Botanical Garden in Stockbridge,  MA;  SW1 Gallery in London, UK:  Ferrin Gallery in Pittsfield, MA; Tappan Z Gallery in Tarrytown, NY; Cranwell Resort & Spa and Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA; Dream Studios and Gallery in Chelsea, Manhattan, the Zenith House - Devon Artist Network  in Exeter, England, Sohn Fine Art in Stockbridge, MA and the William Cullen Bryant Homestead in Cummington,  MA.
 
Sohn photographs freelance for a variety of clientele, including Berkshire Magazine, The Artful Mind, the Berkshire’s Visitor’s Bureau, Chesterwood Museum, Schantz Galleries and Dale Chihully, Travelraters, Images Publishing, Douglas Elliman, Kinderhook Realty and the nonprofits City Harvest and Habitat for Humanity. She also photographs weddings, events and portraits. In addition to teaching at Sohn Fine Art, she also teaches photography at Berkshire Community College and IS183 Art School.

 

 

 

 

MASTERING PORTRAITS

This workshop, taught by Award Winning Photographer, Greg Gorman, is presented as part of Sohn Fine Art’s MASTER ARTIST SERIES (MAS) Program. The workshop is in conjunction with Gorman's 40 Year Retrospective Show, A Distinct Vision, at Sohn Fine Art Gallery July 5 - September 30. This one day workshop will begin with Greg previewing some images from his 40 year career as a photographer followed by a critique of each participant’s imagery. Greg will focus heavily on pushing each individual’s communications skills to create the trust and confidence between the photographer and the subject to finally create that connected portrait. Greg’s intention at the end of the day will be for the student to be able to see and understand light and communicate with the talent in order to achieve their desired goals.

 

Greg will show participants how to take advantage of the abundant natural light at locations throughout the Berkshires. He will guide participants on how to enhance a portrait by working with bounce, indirect light, and open sun, while using a range of light modifiers that include silks, reflectors, and blacks. He discusses and demonstrates the most effective use of lenses, camera angles, and appropriate lighting for a variety of situations and personalities.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Greg Gorman is a master photographer noted most for his celebrity portraits and nudes. A recipient of the 2013 Professional Photographers of America (PPA) Lifetime Achievement Award, Gorman’s exceptional career is currently being highlighted in a 40 year retrospective exhibition touring museums throughout Europe with an intimate showing of his retrospective at Sohn Fine Art Gallery July 5 - September 30.

 

“For me a photograph is most successful when it doesn’t answer all the questions,” says Gorman, “and it leaves something to the imagination.”

When not shooting famous faces, Greg travels the world for specialized photographic projects and continues to work on

 

compilations of his imagery. A book of his photos for the award winning l.a. Eyeworks campaign, entitled Framed: Greg Gorman for l.a. Eyeworks was released in 2012.  In the fall of 2009, Damiani Editore released In Their Youth: Early Portraits, which incorporates forty years of unpublished work. These join Gorman’s previously published books Greg Gorman Volume I, Greg Gorman Volume II, Inside Life, Perspectives, As I See It, Just Between Us and a book of platinum prints entitled Odes to Pindar, published by The Journal of the 21st Century

Greg Gorman has been recognized for his contribution to the world of photography as well as his charitable works by The Lucie Foundation, The Elton John Aids Foundation, Aids Healthcare Foundation, Focus on Aids, The Oscar De La Hoya Foundation, Vox/Out Voices of Style + Design, PETA, Angel Art, Pacific Design Center Stars of Design, and PawsLA.

Born in 1949 in Kansas City, Missouri, Greg attended the University of Kansas from 1967-69 with a major in photojournalism.  He completed his studies at the University of Southern California, graduating with a Master of Fine Arts degree in cinematography in 1972. He currently divides his time between his homes in Los Angeles and Mendocino, California.

 

EXPLORATION OF IMAGE MAKING & PERSONAL EXPRESSION

This workshop, taught by Pulitzer Prize Nominated Photographer, Matuschka, is presented as part of Sohn Fine Art’s MASTER ARTIST SERIES (MAS) Program. The workshop is in conjunction with Matuschka’s 40 Year Retrospective Show, A Body Biography, at Sohn Fine Art Gallery April 26 – July 1. The workshop will include student portfolio reviews, a survey of Matuschka’s influences, assignments to “take your work further” including hand-toning giclee prints, and a presentation on Matuschka’s various approaches to image alteration and the difference between "making" a picture and "taking" one.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Artist, Photographer and Activist Matuschka has been recognized with numerous honors, citations, and awards, including the Rachel Carson Award, Gilda Radner Award, and inclusion in Life Books’, “One Hundred Photographs that Changed the World.”

Working alongside masters of her generation, Matuschka became a skillfull printer, specializing in chemically manipulating and "painting" or toning photographic prints. Her works are held by private and public collections through out the world, including the Center for Political Graphics, Cincinnati Museum of Art, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Flemming Museum, Hallisch-Frankischen Museum, Henry Buhl Foundation, Musee de l'Elysee, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Woodstock Center for Photography and the World Press Photo Foundation. Matushka University appearances include Harvard, Columbia, The Contemporary Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale and The Art Cultural Center, Malaga, Spain. Selected publications include The Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, The Guardian, Glamour, MacClean’s, Marie Claire, Encyclopaedia Britannica, The New York Post, Time, The Washington Post and Vogue.
